The 4th

Had to go around getting stories for this job and that. Which also means photos. This was my favorite.

Although I'm rather partial to this one.

And these appealed to me, for various reasons.

On the last one, I know it looks like she has a flag growing out of her head, but if you ignore that part, she has a sulky, sullen, stubborn expression. We have much in common.

I once took a photo of a ball player at spring training. Only trouble is, a light standard is growing out the middle of his head.

Good pix. I was part of an umbrella drill team in South Pasadena's parade today.

Sorry I didn't get to cover that. (I recently took a photo of someone I admire, and thought it was really good. And she said, "Oh my god, the orchid is jumping out of my brain." I never ever noticed that shit before.)

Now we can just photoshop them out!

I think that 2nd pup may have had a bit too much to drink. Hope you had a chance to relax and enjoy the day a bit yourself, too.

You forgot to say that I never visit.

I love the 1st shot... And 2, 3 and 4! (and who wouldn't be glum sharing a wagon with a flag sticking up from her head,)

Did Altadena have a parade? But there are no anti-Walmart marchers, so you must be in Sierra Madre.

Now I wish I'd gone to South Pasadena to see the Umbrella Drill team.

All great pics. You can't go wrong with cute dogs and kids, even when the kid has a flag growing out of her head.

I don't think she's pouting, I think she's skeptical.

Great pix. If I had a flag growing out of my head, I might be sullen, too.

I love these. It looks like you found the right place to celebrate.

PS Love these photos but you knew that.

Susan is right -- kids and dogs -- whatarya gonna say "I hate it?"

Great photos that capture a personal, "small town" essence of the 4th. The last one cracks me up. :-)

My favorites are the first and last.

And didn't last night sound like a gun battle? Made me glad we don't have any vegetation in the back yard.

Bellis said...

Talking of gun battles, the Americafest at the Rose Bowl focused on lauding the country's military might. When this huge cargo plane or whatever it was flew over very, very low, the hairs on my back stood up. I felt we were going to be bombed or something, it was a very visceral fear. I prefer my July 4 the way it is in your photos.

All these photos have their delights,
. That last one, she looks like she is doing time--and watch out when she is freed.

Petrea Burchard said...

Bellis, we were on the Sunset Mountain Road when that plane went over. It was very low--seemed about as high as we were. A friend told me it flew over the Starlight Bowl in Burbank, too. She said it was a WWII military transport.

I got the same feeling you did--it was much too low, eerie, frightening. We watched it go right over the Rose Bowl. Fireworks exploded immediately afterward. Not funny.

The kid looks skeptical - yeah, you two have something in common

Petrea, you did what I've always wanted to do - watch the fireworks from Sunset Ridge road (above Millard campground? I was on Suicide bridge and didn't see this cargo plane. Might be because I was looking south watching South Pasadena's display.

... a Radio Flyer made out of plastic? tsk, tsk! What a shame.

altadenahiker said...

Birdman solved the mystery -- she's not upset because a flag is growing out of her head. No, she just hates plastic.

The first little girl looks absolutely joyous! Everyone else looks pretty festive, too.

Fun photos . . . a little Americana and some cute dogs!

Petrea Burchard said...

PA, we didn't stay up there long enough to see the fireworks. We had driven up and had to be out before 8pm (turned out we got locked in anyway, but that's another story). Next year we plan to walk up.

The cuteness is almost too much - it needs the flag growing out of a child's head for balance. I photographed my brother-in-law recently at a restaurant and the light-fitting in the background mysteriously turned into a sombrero on his head. {And no, we weren't dining in a Mexican restaurant.}

Such delightful photos, especially the bottom one. Oh to know what that girl is thinking!

altadenahiker said...

At least I didn't make you guys look at my video. It had the whole parade, complete with homemade band and washboard player, and an ADD pogo stick kid. (The video was horribly produced. I absolutely loved it.)

Send me your video, please, please, please.

Great photos!!! Even the one with the flag sprouting out of her head!!! The top little girl is fabulous!!!

We have a rather big small town parade up here!!! And Kelly and I were in it!!! My girlfriend has a Vet and is part of the Corvette group that rides in the parade...she drove with Diego in her lap and I rode with Kelly in my lap...yeah....104 lbs of dog!!! And '68 Olympian Robin Morning on the back of the vet!!!

Mister Earl said...

Don't let the cops catch you driving with a dog in your lap.

TheChieftess said...

Heh, heh! No problem on the 4th Mr E! But I probably should warn her for future reference!!! As for me...no problem...I'm not driving with 104 lbs of dog in my lap!!! (she's going to doggie weight watchers!!!)

The girl in the first photo has the exact opposite attitude as the girl in the wagon with scowl on her face...
