Overheard, while walking the dog

"Jessica!"
"What?"
"Are you still on the phone?"
"No!"
"I thought you were going to help me plant the lettuce!"
"I am!"
"Well then, get out here!"
"Okay!"

...

"Jessica!"
"What?"
"Are you still on the phone?
"No!"
"Don't lie to me -- are you on the phone or not?"
"I'm almost not!"

Almost not? Love it. I wonder if she was at the stage where you say goodbye, and the other one says goodbye, then you say goodbye again, and so on, as no-one wants to be the first to hang up. It's always like that with my family.

What a pretty house color - wonder where it is?

Brilliant, I'm using almost not in conversation from now on.

i was almost not going to comment, but i'm still here. so there.

best places to eavesdrop (whether you want to or not): 1) a neighborhood stroll or 2) the neighborhood cafe. They are both like extensions of our living rooms.

I think she was about 10, so this was a nifty bit of equivocation.

(Bellis, I'll tell you if PA doesn't know.)

One of the great Hollywood script writers went around with a tape recorder, taping things people actually said. Save these gems for your novel.

I'm with Mister Earl on this one.

My grandpa used to say "Almost only counts in hand grenades".

Classic. I wonder what Jessica said on the phone between these two conversations.

almost not...lord, I still wouldn't be sitting down if I'd used that line with my mother!

@Brenda--and horseshoes! My grandfather used to tell me "sorta? like sorta pregnant? Either it is, or it isn't, it isn't 'sorta'."

unmitigated gall...lol.

I've heard and seen plenty of things on walks--many of which, I could never post to my blog. ;-O

haha you should go post that on www.overheardwhat.com

They have a couple of other funny overheard conversations.
My favourite is:

Guy: "I sold my iPhone beause 50% of people have one."
Friend: "Maybe you should sell your genitals too."

PA must know every square inch of the San Gabriels, because I've only stumped her once.

Anon, I believe Earl told me about your site, and I've almost visited.

Typical teenager, right?

WV: askno. I think that summarizes this conversation nicely.

It's amazing what one can overhear in a coffee shop or while taking a walk. Love the color of that house!

I like "almost not" but I won't use it because I'm using unmitigated language now.

New Year's resolution.

PA, you are amazing.

I'm definitely adding, "I'm almost not," to my vocabulary. Unlike Petrea, I think I'm still lacking in the unmitigated language department.

"Almost not." This just may be the quote of the year.

Is the laundry done?
Almost not.

You made me laugh out loud. In a public place! Everyone stared. I hope you're ashamed.

You did to try to listen.

when it comes to famous quotes of 2012, I've already lost to, "I tripped and fell into a lifeboat."

Many years ago I lived next door to a family who had a son named Jamie. He was about six. One day during summer, when our windows were open, I heard Jamie standing on the front porch yelling to the girl who lived across the street. He shouted, "Hey Sara, my mom just took a S**T and the whole house stinks!" That was quickly followed by Mom yelling in a louder voice, "Jamie, get in the house right now!"

That image puts me right there in Altadena, with the palm tree, the mountain side, and that 1930's house.

That place is a beauty, isn't it?

It is -- arched doorway, window panes, ivy, color, and all. Nothing like it, as far as I can see, in Salinas, which could use a boost to its sense of humor.
