You have to wear your Wellies or the foxtails will getcha.
All the trees show their age, and probably date back to the original Altadena orchards. Drought, flood, snow, and neglect -- that's just business as usual for them.
Take your pick, no one lives here anymore.
I think of my dad. He loved to ferret out forgotten farms and fields. Once came home with a bag full of feed corn. My mom said, "Now what am I supposed to do with that?"
You can't explain it to the uninitiated and non-believers. Discovery is sweet.

I can't believe I paid 630yen (about $6) for just 3 oranges today. Consider me jealous.
I was hoping to be the first, but failed.

A bag full of feed corn? Hehehehe. So now I know where you got your exploring and foraging genes from. I love love love the black and white and color in your photos. It's like time travel.
A neighbor gave me a bag full of citrus - oranges, tangelos, grapefruit. I've been in heaven.
I love what you've done with the photos, love your words about your dad.
discovery is best!
I'm from a place in Eastern Europe, where oranges were given as gifts.
The sweet victory!
Like that you are following in your Dad's footsteps. He and my grandmother would of got along great.
Feed corn? Hmmm...must have many uses.
Interesting effect on your photos. I fancy an orange now for some reason.
If I recall, my father, a stubborn man, cooked the feed corn and actually ate it. Or maybe just one ear. Or just one bite.
Uh-oh, I discovered photo apps.
Excellent find!! I love a walk where you stumble upon treasures.
Somebody always beats me to it. Story of my life. Er, I mean your DISCOVERY in mixing B/W with color. I like it.
ha ha ha hee hee who who ha ha whala whla bing bong (laughing hard at your comments at my place. Only You!)
Kindred spirit.
My WV is unrapho. I think you and I both like to unrap discoveries. We be unraphos.
This is somewhere in Altadena? I want to ask you where exactly, but then it wouldn't be a secret garden anymore, eh? Love those neon colors - very Andy Warhol.
You definitely have the keys to the kingdom if you know of a secret citrus garden (especially one with such funky colors). It must smell like heaven when it's in bloom. As for feed corn, the best use for that is to make a "hot sack" (a small cotton sack filled with feed corn that can be microwaved since the corn won't pop) for use as you would a hot water bottle (warming up a bed, sore muscles, etc). In the winter I can't survive without mine.
Katie, you're kidding. Really? Of course, outside of the midwest, I don't know where one could pilfer -- I mean, harvest -- it.
These shots are eye candy! Or maybe eye candy (feed)corn!
Say, I like those funky photos. And I love your story, KB. The feed corn would have stumped me but I'd appreciate the gesture.
So....were they sweet? :)

Very cool color thing you have going on. New camera? Phone? Ap?
Maybe you've discovered where Caltech buried it's toxic waste.
Wow. Good haul.
BTW, the comment you left for me yesterday made me laugh out loud. *snort* You're such a riot.
PA just doesn't understand that we artists must stretch and take chances, and chances can sometimes generate controversy or nuclear meltdowns.
Mentioning the Wellies is so Kate Hepburn.
Artist are the worst sort of people.
Nice coloring technique. Very saturated (the color and the fruit trees).
Mom's lemon and naval orange trees just drove her crazy this year. Too many fruits (?), not enough friends to take it.
I try to live a life in which the foxtails win from time to time.
Ryan discovered a little, forgotten plum tree in our yard 2 years ago. He was ecstatic! We've trimmed back the trees above it, in hopes it will thrive.
Karin would I kid you? I got my feed corn at a Farm & Feed supply store where my mom lives (about 40 miles from Berkeley). With all the horses in your area I'd be surprised if there wasn't a feed store right near you too! I made my sack with a seam down the middle so I can easily drape it over my shoulder to ease sore muscles.
Do you have another pair of wellies in the same color? Cute . . .
Citrus garden has a nice scent, isn't?
I have in my orchard some citrus and I love to mix some leaves to feel its fragrance.
Another fruit campaign?

But Katie, you mean I have to make A SEAM? I can't sew. Marjie can sew, Margaret can sew, I'll be even Brenda and Bandit can sew. But I can't.
Sonia, me too.
I have a secret place to find blueberries, but someone bought the adjacent property and I think I'm losing my anonymity. My forays will be a little more visible since they are clearing out some of the trees. I'd trade blueberries for citrus though.
I'll admit I'm not much into gardening or gardens, but this one is very colorful.
Lovely pics
