Excellent Adventure

Bellis, Petrea, and Karin met up in Old Town Pasadena today. We were game for anything.

Hey look, I'm doing a Kenny Mac.

A Virg, the Mechanical Years.

This is my Laurie.

A PA.

We met Pasadena Fire Captain, Myron L. Cooper, Station 33.

And nice as he was, we are, after all, jounalists, and were thus compelled to ask the probing questions. “Can I ring the bell,” for example, and, “Where's the Dalmation?”

The fire station brass pole is still the quickest way to get from the living quarters to the first floor. We had an actual demonstration. He was really fast -- faster than my Canon SO1100 IS Powershot, if you can believe that.

Later we joined up for a group photo and when I downloaded, imagine my surprise. Who gets a shoulder hug, like she’s the firefighter’s best friend? I never heard this particular pose was an option for the rest of us.

But you know what pleases me about this? You can tell I'm way taller.

(By popular request, the Petrea)

Fun!

Petrea likes to say we're the same height. But as you can see, I'm practically a skyscraper when we're standing next to each other.

Mister Earl said...

This height question merits further exploration.

Amy said...

Or... you're standing on a box. ;)

Did any of you slide down the pole?

Petrea said...

Where's your Petrea?

J+P said...

One of you is hot!

Petrea said...

J+P, I think he's married.

altadenahiker said...

Ok P, you asked for it.

Petrea said...

Woops.

Please don't post that one photo. Please.

Petrea said...

Aw, you are so nice. You had me scared for a second there. Whew.

J+P said...

OMG! You traded phone numbers! That is so … not journalistic

altadenahiker said...

Yes JP, the guy five to the right was the pole slider. Petrea, did you get the uniforms? Mine had the night gleam.

Petrea said...

I got 'em. I'm going to work on a post for mid-week, and I'll link to yours. This one's a hoot. I love it.

my wv is "supplem"--I'll supplem(ent) your post with mine.

Shell Sherree said...

Hee! Aptly chosen photos. It will be a No Contest in your favour if we are ever photographed together, Hiker. So, the dalmation???

bandit said...

She has the best WV's, too.

Hotcha, Mama!

Jean Spitzer said...

Wonderful. Photo parody (homage?).

Some folks get all the hugs. But you are way way taller.

Sara said...

You may be taller, but Petrea sure looks cozy under that big strong arm.

dbdubya said...

You asked, "Can I ring the bell? Where's the dalmation?" I hope you didn't ask if you could play with their hoses!

altadenahiker said...

Don't start anything, DB.

Sara, it occurs to me I could have photoshopped that arm right off.

Amy, Bellis asked if she could, but they wouldn't let her upstairs. Shell, no dog. Jean, I am, aren't I.

TheChieftess said...

LOL!!! Glad I didn't have any coffee while reading this!!! My computer is safe for now!!!

Marjie said...

I rarely get to say that I'm taller than anyone. And I never get to meet cute firemen. I would ask where the dalmation was, too.

Petrea said...

I'm not short. I'm petite.

Ken Mac said...

let's go baby!

J+P said...

I'm really disappointed by the lack of coffee-spewing on this blog.

TheChieftess said...

Only for the lack of having coffee this morning J+P!!!

Brenda's Arizona said...

Oh, an excellent adventure indeed!

Margaret said...

Lucky you. No goddesses for me? Oh--or maybe you are the goddesses.

Mister Earl said...

You're a TALL drink of water on a long hot day.

WV: burbals. I'll let DB handle that.

Laurie said...

And HOW did I miss out on this adventure?

Harumph!

Great stuff. That me is netter than mine.

dbdubya said...

Mr. Earl - the definition of "burbal" is the sound of relief a fireman makes when visited by three women journalists and none of them ask to play with the hoses.

Laurie said...

Better. Not netter. Damn you iPhone autocorrect.

Cafe Observer said...

WoW, I've really never seen Petrea with so happy a smile as when you caught her in the arms of that fireman! Well, like they say: whatever make you happy.

Carolynn said...

Looks and sounds like an excellent field trip. So...where WAS the dalmation....?

Banjo said...

There are BRICKS in California????

And why is everyone so bundled uP?

Mister Earl said...

DB: Actually, I realized that burbals is a condition a man experiences when living in snow country.

I'm not interested in firemen unless I'm burning.

Paula said...

Oh, there's nothing worse than the reveal!
Did any of you do a "Bridget Jones"??? Wheeeeeee!!!

Petrea said...

What's a "Briget Jones?" Maybe I want to do it.

Hiker, I forgot to tell you your "Laurie" is really excellent.

Pasadena Adjacent said...

so your calling me a carpetbagger?

Katie said...

Great photos! I so want to hang out with you all next time I'm in the Pasadena area. And Petrea you so DON'T want to do a Bridgette Jones.

Bellis said...

Heck, I can't go shopping for the day without all you guys having lots of fun with the comments. This homage is a brilliant idea. The Laurie photo came out really well - it's as though you had that cyclist waiting for his cue. (And I won't tell Petrea your shoes had raised soles.)

Petrea said...

It's okay, Bellis. So did mine.

Paula said...

Petrea said...

Thanks, Paula. Of course I had to watch a few of the Briget Jones vids. You can't beat Colin Firth and Renee Zellweger.

Laurie said...

Yeah, Hiker, every time I look at your Laurie, I wonder how you managed to take one of MY pictures? Love the One Way sign, in particular. Cyclist. Bricks. Text. Nice going.

But I'm still irritated that I was writing a column and dealing with a cranky daughter while you guys were having all the fun. I'm taller than YOU, damn it.

I crack up every time I look at that group photo with the embracing fireman.

TheChieftess said...

Spewing wine this time J+P!!! Loved the Bridget Jones clip...I forgot about that one and couldn't figure out the Bridget Jones reference!!! Perfect!!!

You did nail the resemblance in the photos Hiker, and I just pulled up Laurie's again and noticed the sign and the cyclist...very nice Laurie touch!!!

Terri said...

Obviously you're much taller. And taller is way, way better.

Mister Earl said...

I'm building a basketball team around you.

altadenahiker said...

That's the spirit! (And you are so not taller, Laurie; not in stocking feet.)

Bellis said...

I look up to all of you.

Paula said...

Petrea, I thought Renee was very brave to leave that bit for posterity....

Petrea said...

Renee is brave. Good at comedy and drama. She's one of my top faves.

Laurie is tall! Probably the tallest of all of us.

Susan Campisi said...

Good things come in small packages! Which should give you a hint as to where I stand in the line-up.

altadenahiker said...

I won't mention that even when Laurie goes hiking she wears four-inch heels.

Susan Campisi said...

By the way, these photos are really great. I've enjoyed visiting all the other blogs you link to.

Laurie said...

5'9 1/4" at my last dr appt baby. Can ya beat it? (and no heels, you goof. Tho I do love walking around at over six feet tall. Like Chieftess in bare feet.)

TheChieftess said...

I've only got you by a 1/4 inch Laurie...or at least I did...haven't been measured in a long time!!!

Petrea said...

Goodness. You guys are TALL.

Paula said...

Best song evah dbdubya!

SHORT PEOPLE

Short people got no reason
Short people got no reason
Short people got no reason
To live

They got little hands
Little eyes
They walk around
Tellin' great big lies
They got little noses
And tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes
On their nasty little feet

Well, I don't want no short people
Don't want no short people
Don't want no short people
`Round here

Short people are just the same
As you and I
(A fool such as I)
All men are brothers
Until the day they die
(It's a wonderful world)

Short people got nobody
Short people got nobody
Short people got nobody
To love

They got little baby legs
That stand so low
You got to pick em up
Just to say hello
They got little cars
That go beep, beep, beep
They got little voices
Goin' peep, peep, peep
They got grubby little fingers
And dirty little minds
They're gonna get you every time
Well, I don't want no short people
Don't want no short people
Don't want no short people
'Round here

This post on so many levels made me realize: I'm jealous!

Virginia said...

Can I just say this in one of my all time fav blog posts and not because i was mentioned? LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT mainly because all my favs were there plus firemen. OH wait....where was Earl? :)

When I get my fanny home from Paris I'm blowing out there again. I can hardly wait to see you all and hug your necks. And Earl...... you're going to have to get on your knees and beg forgiveness about my Auburn Tigers. It will all come to pass.

Kaori said...

It's so cliche I never tell this to anyone...but I have a thing for firefighters. So I just wanted to say thank you for this post (and all the links, too!) ;-D

altadenahiker said...

Everyone of you is in one of my next four Annual Christmas Smackdowns. Kaori, Katie, Terri... a few of you have not had the pleasure. I personally can't wait.

TheChieftess said...

I just have to say...when I was in high school and college...I couldn't understand why all the really short petite (and ok...cute...) girls went out with all the tall guys!!!

TheChieftess said...

We can't wait to hug your darlin' southern belle neck too Virginia!!! Make sure to make some time to come up and visit us here in God's country, we'd love to have you and the Dena crew!!! !!! But be sure to bring your woolen mittens!!!

dbdubya said...

The Chieftess wants to know why all the cute, petite girls dated the tall guys. I want to know why she dated all my short friends.

TheChieftess said...

Darlin' only one of your short friends...and once with your ex-brother-in-law!!! But then, I didn't know then what I know now!!!

Cafe Observer said...

Wow, 68 comments, so far. This certainly was a popular re-quest.

Mister Earl said...

Ah, thanks Karin. You know how I love a good smackdown. Don't you love it when DBW and Chieftess have private talks here!

Reminds me when I was a freshman in college at a major university and saw a lineman from the football team with his tiny girlfriend. Certainly sent the imagination places.

Cafe, I'm making it 69, just for you.

TheChieftess said...

I'll just round it out at 70...in honor of all the short and tall girls from the class of '70...

pasadenapio said...

Shell (and all), you'll see the dalmation at the annual Fire Service Day open house at Station 33 every May (on North Lake just above Villa Street).
