Ok, so I need to branch off from the bad hair days of my adolescence (but hey, that never gets old does it?) and concentrate on YOU. Today in botany class we learned about cultivars, man-made variations within a species, joined by distinct characteristics. And I thought it might be fun to guess whether some of you are oldest, middle, youngest, or the only child in the family.
Birth order can include one of the following characteristics:
Oldest: Do you write in perfect 4th grade cursive? Are you bossy? Are you nurturing and bossy? Are you wealthy or at least constantly employed? Do you always want to find your inner-self, but fear you never will? Are you a tortured free spirit? Can you cook?
Middle: Are you a tortured free spirit? Have you been married more than twice? Have you ever been arrested, and did an older sibling get you off the rap with a slap on the wrist? Have you ever ghostwritten anything? Are you completely independent (except when arrested)? Is employment of any kind a problem? Can no one read your signature? Do you open a tin of refried beans and throw in some onions and call it a meal?
Youngest: Are you incredibly spoiled, yet deeply treasured and encouraged by all? Is employment any kind of a problem? Can you even sign your name? Are you a tortured free spirit? Does your mother send you cans of refried beans with instructions for using the can opener?
Only: Are you a bit of all the above?
So Atladenahiker X freud var. grandihair sez:
Petrea: Middle
Mike: Only
West Coast Girlie: Oldest
3 dot: Oldest (or nearly)
Miss H: Only
Wolfwatcher: Oldest
Margaret: Oldest
Susan: Oldest
KenMac: Only
PA: Youngest
Vanda: Oldest or Only
Laurie: Only or youngest
PasadenaPIO: Oldest or youngest
Tash: Oldest or middle
Mr Earl: Youngest
K: Middle
Blue Kitchen: Youngest

I'm actually the middle in the family, but I think because I was the only girl, I behave more like a take-charge oldest. I was Daddy's favorite. I wonder if my older brother reads this blog? (He asked me recently who Altadena Hiker is.) He would agree because I was always the one who was picked among the siblings to ask for favors.
I'm writing/working at the Coffee Gallery this afternoon and having a lovely time.
You are correct about me. I am the youngest but so far placed from my last sibling that it makes me more of an only.
You are very perceptive. Do you read tarot? Fortune tell? What do it mean, o' Oracle of Aladena?
googlecultivarification
HAH! you changed it to "only" and took off the "youngest." I saw that! You must've heard me talking to myself while reorganizing my music library.

Ah, only and middle, and youngest and only. I wasn't finished. I change constantly, because I'm, I'm ....
Oh come on, you've seen my two older sisters on my blog! Cheater!
FYI, I answered yes to almost every single question. That means I have multiple personalities?
FYI, my sisters are 12 and 20 years older, so it's more like only for me, too. Judy was out of the house by the time I was 7.
Nope...Older sister 4 years, younger brother 2 years. I'm troubled.
My word verification scramble for the day is "songs" sweet
Sorry. I am the youngest of three girls. But I do believe that I deserve to be treasured and admired by all. My sisters would not agree, but they would agree that I am spoiled. I am not too tortured, but I do feel a tension between being a free spirit and being a good little soldier.
Ok, so I'm batting a little over 700 here. And Laurie, I didn't know about the sisters, only your mom. I was going to post her as mom of the year, but given your birth order and employment challenges, you probably would have charged me $$. So she'll be the mom of year in spirit. But what about those who haven't weighed in? Where do you think those cultivars fall?
ha ha ha TOO MUCH. Okay, I have been arrested, my galpal says I am bossy, and I am the youngest. Not bad!
I think 3 dot may have mentioned on his blog that he's the baby of the family. But I can see why you pegged him as the oldest. He seems kinda' bossy. :)
Whada bout Madam Gramaphone & ben W? Or, are they on some special list?
Hey, you keep editing your original answers! Like I said before... cheater!
I'm a scientist and a writer. I bow to evidence and I edit. I'm sorry if a youngest/only child can't understand this.
I'm Only. Am I really that bossy?
Okay, now you're just being mean!
Is AH an only?
Nope! I'm the baby! Robby is 2 yrs older than I. I'm not sure we really fit the stereotypes anyway ;-)
I can't really participate in this discussion in that my brother was an only child.
I am the oldest of five females, no brothers. You have no freakin' idea how accurate that is.
this is all very facinating, but I am curious how I would get pegged... we don't have too deep of a relationship AH, so that might make this one a tough guess...
Or have I mentioned my birth order placement before?
No, you haven't mentioned it. So here's my hedged guess: Only or youngest. Let me know how I did.
Middle. You have me pegged. I told you stuff! I try to keep my wild past a secret, in keeping with my shiny persona.
Word verification: bleaters.
Well I'm torn - do I want to reveal my position and have your prediction changed? :)
My parents were both frustrated by the role of their oldest sibling in their family growing up, so they tried their hardest not to raise their oldest child with traditional oldest sibling characteristics.
And so you have me! First born, but displaying characteristics of first born, middle, and probably even youngest/only child tendencies if I'm honest with myself.
This is fun!
Well, of course, this is just a particle of who we are afterall. Another way to play this kind of game is to choose a word, just one word, to describe yourself. (everyone is multi-faceted and blah, blah; that's not the point of this exercise.) Mine would be "stubborn." Stubborn has served me both well and ill. It has saved my life, and it has cost me other kinds of chances. One word, try it.
Karin: Mister Earl is the oldest of two. I have gone through all the angst of the oldest forging a path, of sorts, through the family chaos. My word would be "seeker," but lately, I'm a "finder."
Laurie: Who besides Judy is your sister? Does your aunt also post from time to time?
Well, I think I'll go have a gin and "tokinc."
I'm the second of four and the second girl (I have two younger brothers).
For me?
"apprehensive"
It's a way of life...
Thanks for the info about Boxer Rescue LA Karin, and GOD JUL!!! :)
Well, this was a good test of human nature - when it's about "ME", everybody comes & leaves comments!
AH - you've gotta know that I'm the one & only :)! But I'm mostly like the oldest - I've picked up numerous surrogate siblings along the way; but canned beans & onions is definitely a meal.
Tash is right -- everyone loves to talk about themselves, right? :-)
One word me: curious. (Stubborn was already taken by Altadenahiker...though I'm a big fan of that word, and its inherent goods/bads too.)
One word? Resilient. I'm like a bad penny.
Don't think I haven't thought about it.
Oh, this is fun.
Imaginative
That's a good and a bad thing, too.
Resilient, curious, apprehensive; Those could never be bad things.
Well, okay the cat accident and like that but they have nine lives...
I was going to pick pragmatic but it sounded too serious. It's back to organizing my sock drawer-the puppets are in disarray.
My word? So many, but 2day let's just go with - WHY?
MG, Imaginative is perfect for you. I adore that quality. I'm creative but not imaginative.
I used to be diplomatic. Now I'm only diplomatic if I choose to be. Does it have to be an adjective? I choose a noun: "communicator."
How can one be creative and not imaginative?
One can be imaginative without being creative. As per the definition of imaginative: without truth
heh!
Oh, the implications!
You pegged me correctly; I'm an oldest. I bristle at the mention of 'bossy' though!
Miss H: Absolutely correct. Susan is imaginative (tho not necessarily a liar). Petrea, that avatar communicates oh so many things. Let's see: Seeker, apprehensive, questioning, communicator, imaginative, resiliant, creative, bossy. And I think tash is calling me some kind of panderer. I think we have the beginnings of a government.
I can't be bossy. I'm a middle child. Strike it from the record! I said so!
Busted. My sis speaks truth.
I'm the oldest.
since I am not even on the damn list I can't lose.I am an only child and why yes, I do possess all the lovely positive superlatives from all of the above.

Piper Robert, you are not at all in keeping with the eldest. Your blog is not uptodate, so you're lazy, plus your comments on this post are quite tardy. Too much of a windbag, I wager.
Virg, you are in keeping with the only. You think you are the one and only. But that's ok, if you give me one of those smoked ribs.
Piper Robert lazy? Them's fightin' words (and probably how the Hatfield and McCoy feud got started).
I resemble that remark! Actually, AH, I am the oldest. And given that, you've pretty much nailed my profile, except for the wealthy part. Oh, and I think I know my inner-spirit--just wish it could figure out a way to become wealthy. The handwriting thing cracked me up the most. I say of my signature that it's not so much a signature as it is good penmanship.
